First post here. Crime rate is something to consider -Oak Grove sits at 734.2 per 100K. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Anyone in a similar situation?

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely challenging and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Dating scene is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Houston it's solid.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. No regrets on my end..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is traffic. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

I've lived in Lakewood for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The pet-friendliness scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
- The food scene scene is average
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for couples. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
