Considering Oak Lawn vs Miami -help me decide

OK so Crime rate is something to consider -Oak Lawn sits at 149.9 per 100K. Household incomes average around $82,493 in Oak Lawn. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Worth the trade-offs? Cheers. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is underrated in most areas.

The food scene here is solid. Tons of great Italian places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. it exceeded my expectations. Worth doing your research before committing.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's exactly what I was looking for. Compared to Houston it's better than expected.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is safety. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 55, moved here 13 years ago from Boston. I've lived in West and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The walkability situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for young professionals. tough vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $40K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.
