Raising a family in Oak Lawn -thoughts?

Hi all, We have two kids and Rent is about $1,310/month for a decent place. Median household income is $82,493, which feels pretty solid for the area. You can expect to pay around $1,310 for rent here. Poverty rate is 6.0%, which is pretty low. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Friendly people
- Walkable downtown
- Active local events
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Lack of diversity
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Limited cultural events
- Homelessness issues downtown
Am I overthinking this? The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Uptown. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in construction. If you're in education you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

We moved here with our family and I genuinely enjoy living here. Schools in Oak Park area are decent. Kids love it here.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want outdoor recreation, then yeah this place is great. But if nightlife matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to LA it's challenging.
