Raising a family in Oak Lawn -thoughts?

Rent is about $1,310/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 6.0%, which is pretty low. With a population of 57,098, Oak Lawn is a smaller city. The unemployment rate is 3.2%, which is pretty low. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Pros:
- Easy commute
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Not very walkable
- Far from major airports
- Limited cultural events
- Homelessness issues downtown
It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in South for 14 years. Moved from Salt Lake City for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is decent - we have national forests within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Homeless population growing downtown. And safety can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 8/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The weather scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Riverside. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in finance. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is nightlife. I genuinely enjoy living here. Worth doing your research before committing.

My experience has been mostly positive. it exceeded my expectations. The only thing I'd watch out for is public transit. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 8 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..
