Best and worst neighborhoods in Oak Ridge

Poverty rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $118,718, which feels pretty solid for the area. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development. Would love some local perspective. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely better than expected and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2023 and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's been a really good experience overall.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Greenfield for 5 years. Moved from Denver for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2015 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
government is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is excellent - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Greenfield schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Chain restaurants dominate. And dating scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 9/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I'm a pharmacist and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. The community is improving and there's always something going on.
