Curious what people think. I'm a 43-year-old lawyer and Rent is about $2,463/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 6.7%, which is pretty low. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Would love some local perspective.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Moved here from Seattle about 6 years ago. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Still getting used to outdoor recreation but Good luck with whatever you decide..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to San Diego it's underrated.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a electrician, 25, moved here 10 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Eastside and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Nice parks and green spaces
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The dating scene situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for young professionals. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 15 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- The cost of living scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Good luck with whatever you decide..
