Cost of living reality check — Oakland

I've been here for 3 years and Crime rate is something to consider — Oakland sits at 1,271.8 per 100K. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. What neighborhoods would you suggest? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 5 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've been living here for 1 years and I'd say there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The dating scene is hit or miss compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it exceeded my expectations. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Came here for family and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The cost of living is honestly surprisingly good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
