Oakley is underrated, change my mind

Hey folks, I'm single, late 50s, and Homes are going for about $632,800 on average. Rent is about $2,031/month for a decent place. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Used to live on the Greenfield side, now on the Highland side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

I'm a chef and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. The community is challenging and there's always something going on.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from San Francisco about 4 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is improving.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 15 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's exactly what I was looking for. Compared to Dallas it's challenging.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. healthcare used to be much manageable but now it's challenging.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in East. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in education. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
