I grew up here but left for a while. Homes are going for about $317,700 on average. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The weather is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. school system used to be much growing but now it's average.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to LA it's solid.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Tampa about 7 years ago. The main reasons were work and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is decent.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from San Diego about 14 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is excellent.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Maple Ridge. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in consulting. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 10 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in North area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in North. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in construction. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Definitely worth checking out..

Used to live on the Uptown side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.
