Job market in Oakton for tech?

Been meaning to ask this. It's a a smaller city city with about 36,776 people. The unemployment rate is 1.7%, which is pretty low. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Thoughts? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

Used to live on the Springfield side, now on the Meadowbrook side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Came here for retirement and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The dating scene is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Internet is excellent in most areas.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely improving and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I work in engineering here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is excellent. Happy to answer more specific questions..

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely challenging and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

I've lived in East for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Close to major attractions
- The outdoor recreation scene is solid

The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 12 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Houston about 10 years ago. The main reasons were school and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Hope this helps!.
