OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 55, moved here 14 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in Old Town and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Summers can be brutally hot
3. The traffic situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for families. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

The food scene here is underrated. Tons of great farm-to-table places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Westside. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Hope this helps!.

Came here for family and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The food scene is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Springfield. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (East) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.
