Hi all, I grew up here but left for a while. You can expect to pay around $982 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Oberlin sits at 192.7 per 100K. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Anyone in a similar situation?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Seattle about 13 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Close to major attractions
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. No regrets on my end..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want weather, then yeah this place is great. But if pet-friendliness matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Phoenix about 10 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are reasonable, gas is solid.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Eastside for 13 years. Moved from Austin for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2022 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
education is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Eastside schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Dating scene is rough. And public transit can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've been living here for 15 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The nightlife is solid compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Old Town. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in legal. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 3 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Bought a house here in 2021 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone up a bit since then.
