Not sure if this has been asked before, but I grew up here but left for a while. Crime rate is something to consider -Okemos sits at 278.0 per 100K. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Am I overthinking this?

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is community vibe. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much growing but now it's excellent.

Moved here from San Diego about 13 years ago. I love the pace of life here. Still getting used to public transit but Happy to answer more specific questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Minneapolis it's challenging.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely excellent and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
