Is Olathe still affordable?

Hi all, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Rent is about $962/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Would love some local perspective. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (North) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Raleigh about 4 years ago. The main reasons were school and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are manageable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. No regrets on my end..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want pet-friendliness, then yeah this place is great. But if pet-friendliness matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 6 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Downtown. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Hope this helps!.
