Just moved to Olympia, any tips?

Hey folks, Been living here since 2011. Homes are going for about $457,900 on average. Poverty rate is 10.2%, which is around average. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Would love some local perspective. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 11 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Bugs and humidity in summer
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is tough.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Lakewood for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Strong job market in several industries
- The cultural scene scene is surprisingly good

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 12 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Meadowbrook for 8 years. Moved from San Diego for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
education is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is tough - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Meadowbrook schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Road conditions need improvement. And housing market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 6/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from LA about 4 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Affordable housing options
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. No regrets on my end..
