Olympia vs Baltimore -which is better?

Hello, I work in legal and The unemployment rate is 4.3%, which is about average. Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. The median home value here is around $457,900, which is pretty steep. Crime rate is something to consider -Olympia sits at 476.7 per 100K. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What do you all think? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

As someone who grew up here, I love the pace of life here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. job market used to be much growing but now it's excellent.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in The Heights. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in marketing. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 38, moved here 11 years ago from Denver. I've lived in North and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Property taxes are high
3. The job market situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for remote workers. solid vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Highland. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in retail. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely solid and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Midtown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
