Pros and cons of Olympia after 6 years

Been meaning to ask this. My family moved here when I was a kid. Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $457,900 on average. Median household income is $76,930, which feels about average for the area. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Good internet infrastructure
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- High property taxes
- Boring for young people
Anyone in a similar situation? Looking forward to hearing from you all. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I've lived in Uptown for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Diverse dining options
- The cost of living scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Can feel isolated

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for families. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is community vibe. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Charlotte about 1 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are established, gas is average.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 11 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

I work in hospitality here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is tough. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
