So, I'm a remote worker and With a population of 178K, Ontario is a mid-size city. Homes are going for about $568,000 on average. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I've been here 3 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've been in Cedar Grove for 15 years. Moved from Portland for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2022 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.
**Employment:**
legal is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Cedar Grove schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Limited high-paying job options. And traffic can be frustrating.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely decent and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (East) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
