Rent vs buy in Ontario — what makes sense?

First post here. We have two kids and Homes are going for about $568,000 on average. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Seattle about 15 years ago. The main reasons were work and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Close to major attractions
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
