Honest thoughts on life in Orangeburg

Longtime lurker here, I'm a teacher here and Poverty rate is 23.6%, which is higher than I expected. The median home value here is around $145,000, which is actually reasonable. Rent is about $765/month for a decent place. It's a a small town city with about 13,189 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Orangeburg sits at 662.9 per 100K. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Friendly people
- Close to nature

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Limited nightlife
- High property taxes
- Limited cultural events
- Chain restaurants dominate
Am I overthinking this? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 32, moved here 12 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Greenfield and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The cost of living situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for couples. solid vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've been living here for 1 years and I'd say it exceeded my expectations. The pet-friendliness is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Pine Hills area are decent. Kids love it here.
