Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely solid and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Springfield) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a accountant who relocated here from San Francisco about 12 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is decent.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 6 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Four distinct seasons
- Close to major attractions
- The outdoor recreation scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for retirees. Definitely worth checking out..
