Rent in Orinda getting crazy

Not sure if this has been asked before, but Rent is about $2,407/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 59--F, so the weather is moderate. Median household income is $250,001, which feels pretty solid for the area. Poverty rate is 0.4%, which is pretty low. It's a a small town city with about 19,472 people. The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Friendly people
- Nice parks and trails
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Cold winters
- High property taxes
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Not enough green space
Any advice would be great. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Portland about 2 years ago. The main reasons were family and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is pretty good.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 3 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 38, moved here 8 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Meadowbrook and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Close to major attractions
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Nightlife is limited
3. The outdoor recreation situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've been living here for 11 years and I'd say it was the best decision I ever made. The public transit is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..
