Been living here since 2012. Crime rate is something to consider -Oskaloosa sits at 473.1 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $880 for rent here. Rent is about $880/month for a decent place. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely excellent and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2015 and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in East. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in government. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Meadowbrook. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in finance. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Korean.
