Couple moving to Oswego from out of state

Crime rate is something to consider -Oswego sits at 64.2 per 100K. Poverty rate is 1.3%, which is pretty low. With a population of 35,463, Oswego is a smaller city. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $319,000 on average. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Am I wrong here? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely decent and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (The Heights) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Limited entertainment options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is school system. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a accountant, 29, moved here 10 years ago from Denver. I've lived in Fairview and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The school system situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for retirees. improving vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $60K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've been living here for 3 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The traffic is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

My experience has been mostly positive. it's improved dramatically in recent years. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in Highland area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.
