Life in Oswego as a young professional

Hey folks, Just moved here 10 months ago and The median home value here is around $319,000, which seems about average. Poverty rate is 1.3%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $119,881, which feels pretty solid for the area. With a population of 35,463, Oswego is a smaller city. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Nice parks and trails
- Lots of new development

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- High property taxes
- Lack of diversity
People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I've lived in Old Town for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Active local events and festivals
- The walkability scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Chain restaurants dominate

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely underrated and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Downtown) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- The outdoor recreation scene is solid

The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Road conditions need improvement

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for young professionals. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Old Town. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in finance. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 9 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The job market scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Road conditions need improvement

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
