Housing in Ottumwa compared to Albuquerque

The median home value here is around $92,400, which is actually reasonable. The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $956 for rent here. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Lots of new development
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Cold winters
- Sprawl everywhere
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Chain restaurants dominate
Anyone in a similar situation? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 38, moved here 13 years ago from Denver. I've lived in Midtown and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The school system situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for retirees. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 3 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..
