What I wish I knew before living in Overlea

Hey folks, I'm a college student here and The unemployment rate is 4.1%, which is about average. Household incomes average around $86,296 in Overlea. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Denver about 8 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries

Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are pricey, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in South for 7 years. Moved from Phoenix for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
government is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Winters are long and cold. And food scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 7/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
