Curious what people think. Been living here since 2024. Average temperature is around 57--F, so the weather is moderate. Median household income is $53,295, which feels on the lower side for the area. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Does this match your experience? Thanks in advance! Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Boston about 12 years ago. The main reasons were weather and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is challenging.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. No regrets on my end..

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Used to live on the Sunset side, now on the Downtown side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Bought a house here in 2017 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Riverside. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 6 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in North for 15 years. Moved from Atlanta for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. retail is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is solid - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. North schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not very walkable outside downtown. Can feel isolated. And traffic can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 9/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Westside. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in consulting. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Thai.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in North. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Came here for quality of life and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The housing market is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely better than expected and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
