Thinking about relocating to Oxnard from Portland

Anyone else feel this way? Born and raised here. It's a a mid-size city city with about 201K people. Rent is about $1,962/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $617,800 on average. Average temperature is around 59°F, so the weather is moderate. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Any advice would be great. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 55, moved here 15 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Eastside and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The outdoor recreation situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for young professionals. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Bought a house here in 2020 and it exceeded my expectations. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 14 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cultural scene, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
