Living in Palatine -the reality

First post here. My family moved here when I was a kid. Crime rate is something to consider -Palatine sits at 61.8 per 100K. The median home value here is around $347,900, which seems about average. The weather takes some getting used to. Thanks in advance!

Used to live on the South side, now on the Old Town side. Completely different vibe. it's been a really good experience overall.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Chicago it's hit or miss.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 54, moved here 10 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Greenfield and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Limited shopping options
3. The job market situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for retirees. decent vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 11 years here, that's my honest assessment.
