Moving to Palatine for work -advice?

Curious what people think. Just moved here 18 months ago and Average temperature is around 48--F, so expect cold winters. With a population of 66,548, Palatine is a smaller city. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Worth the trade-offs?

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 5 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The healthcare is better than expected compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's been a really good experience overall. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 48, moved here 2 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Old Town and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Friendly community, easy to meet people
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Winters are long and cold
3. The school system situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for remote workers. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $60K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I work in engineering here and it exceeded my expectations. The job market for my field is hit or miss. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
