Why I chose Parkersburg over bigger cities

Anyone else feel this way? I'm a 37-year-old social worker and With a population of 29,461, Parkersburg is a smaller city. Homes are going for about $113,900 on average. Rent is about $746/month for a decent place. You can expect to pay around $746 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 4.3%, which is about average. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to.

Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Lots of new development
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Lack of diversity
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Far from major airports
Would love some local perspective. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (East) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..
