Longtime lurker here, I'm a teacher here and Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. Median household income is $71,829, which feels about average for the area. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Looking forward to hearing from you all.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Chicago about 8 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong job market in several industries
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is excellent.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it was the best decision I ever made. Internet is tough in most areas.

The food scene here is challenging. Tons of great Indian places. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely excellent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Eastside) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 2 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into running, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
