Random thought, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. The median home value here is around $157,600, which is actually reasonable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- The walkability scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for young professionals. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a contractor, 28, moved here 10 years ago from Houston. I've lived in West and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The healthcare situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for couples. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in West for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Phoenix, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good airport with direct flights
- The nightlife scene is solid
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited high-paying job options
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for families. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in South. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.
Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 8 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's been a really good experience overall.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Westside. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in finance. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Italian.
No regrets on my end..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Tampa it's excellent.

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.
