OK so I'm originally from Miami and Rent is about $1,201/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $193,600, which is actually reasonable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. Am I wrong here? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 6 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been in East for 2 years. Moved from San Francisco for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
consulting is strong here. healthcare is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I love the pace of life here. The outdoor scene is average - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. East schools are average. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Property taxes are high. Far from beaches/mountains. And walkability can be frustrating.

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Greenfield. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in construction. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely underrated and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
