Moving to Pasadena — what should I know?

I got a job offer in Pasadena, TX and I'm seriously considering the move. I'm coming from a mid-size city. A few questions:

1. Which neighborhoods should I look at for a $1000-1400 budget?
2. How's the commute situation?
3. Is the crime as bad as the stats suggest?
4. Any hidden costs I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

Don't sleep on Oakwood. It's up and coming and still affordable.

I work in finance and finding a job wasn't hard. Took about 3 months.

For families, I'd recommend looking at Old Town. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.

Respectfully disagree about the safety concerns. In my experience, it really depends on your lifestyle.

Totally agree with this. I've been here 13 years and my experience is very similar.

Good summary. I'd rate it higher personally — maybe 8/10.

The job market has been improving lately. Several education companies moved in recently.
