So, I'm single, late 50s, and Average temperature is around 55--F, so the weather is moderate. Homes are going for about $406,500 on average. The unemployment rate is 7.6%, which is concerning. Crime rate is something to consider -Passaic sits at 529.9 per 100K. It's a a smaller city city with about 69,651 people. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.
Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Low crime in most areas
- Easy commute
- Lots of new development
- Active local events
Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Sprawl everywhere
- Boring for young people
- Limited cultural events
- Not enough green space
TIA! It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely excellent and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Sunset) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want nightlife, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Oak Park for 7 years. Moved from San Francisco for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
education is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Bugs and humidity in summer. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 7/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in North. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Cedar Grove for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The cost of living scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Italian.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Tampa about 14 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Four distinct seasons
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is average.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..

I've been in Fairview for 9 years. Moved from San Francisco for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.
**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is tough - we have national forests within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Fairview schools are decent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not a lot of cultural diversity. Road conditions need improvement. And weather can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 5/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 2 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..
