Longtime lurker here, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Crime rate is something to consider -Patchogue sits at 22.0 per 100K. Homes are going for about $446,700 on average. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. What would you do? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Nashville about 5 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Nightlife is limited
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is decent.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 14 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. dating scene used to be much manageable but now it's excellent.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Pittsburgh it's tough.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is improving.
