Been meaning to ask this. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. What neighborhoods would you suggest? TIA! There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Used to live on the Greenfield side, now on the East side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 4 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 15 years and I'd say it was the best decision I ever made. The walkability is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been here 9 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Bought a house here in 2015 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Moved here from Boston about 8 years ago. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Still getting used to public transit but It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 56, moved here 1 years ago from LA. I've lived in Uptown and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The outdoor recreation situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for young professionals. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. the quality of life is solid. Compared to Phoenix it's decent.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want outdoor recreation, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
