Hey, Rent is about $1,125/month for a decent place. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 14 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a writer, 52, moved here 5 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Midtown and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The outdoor recreation situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for remote workers. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I work in government here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is tough. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I work in education here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is excellent. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Used to live on the Eastside side, now on the Meadowbrook side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
