You can expect to pay around $1,154 for rent here. The median home value here is around $236,200, which is actually reasonable. It's a a small town city with about 5,115 people. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 15 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Raleigh it's underrated.

I've lived in Highland for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Close to major attractions
- The public transit scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for remote workers. No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Denver about 3 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Decent public transit for the size
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are reasonable, gas is average.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. No regrets on my end..
