What surprised you most about Peoria?

I'm single, late 20s, and It's a a mid-size city city with about 112K people. Average temperature is around 55--F, so expect cold winters. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. What are your go-to spots? The city has invested a lot in new development.

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The healthcare is better than expected compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's not perfect but it works for me. Internet is decent in most areas.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Springfield for 9 years. Moved from New York for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is improving - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Springfield schools are hit or miss. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Property taxes are high. And nightlife can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 7/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 9 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from LA about 12 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Strong sense of community
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is tough.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 28, moved here 15 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Meadowbrook and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The food scene situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for young professionals. solid vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $60K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for family and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The walkability is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Used to live on the Westside side, now on the Uptown side. Completely different vibe. I have mixed feelings honestly.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are tough, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've lived in Sunset for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good internet infrastructure
- The safety scene is improving

The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Road conditions need improvement

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
