Biggest downsides of living in Phenix City?

Been meaning to ask this. We're a young couple and Household incomes average around $49,715 in Phenix City. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Anyone in a similar situation? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely improving and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 11 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Midtown. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I work in legal here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is improving. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
