Philadelphia quality of life — am I missing something?
Hey folks, My family moved here when I was a kid. Crime rate is something to consider — Philadelphia sits at 1,021.5 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $1,323 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 5.3%, which is about average. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Does this match your experience? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Bought a house here in 2016 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

I work in tech here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is decent. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say it exceeded my expectations. The nightlife is better than expected compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Austin it's improving.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a HR manager, 35, moved here 8 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Uptown and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Four distinct seasons
2. Close to major attractions
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The community vibe situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for families. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 15 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Highland. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in construction. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Korean.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is tough.
