Been meaning to ask this. Just moved here 3 months ago and Rent is about $1,467/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $344,700, which seems about average. Homes are going for about $344,700 on average. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Thoughts? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I've lived in Old Town for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The school system scene is average
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
