Hey folks, It's a a small town city with about 10,576 people. Average temperature is around 49--F, so expect cold winters. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Is this normal for Pingree Grove? The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely pretty good and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (East) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Lakewood. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in education. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
