Moving to Pittsburgh — what should I know?

I got a job offer in Pittsburgh, PA and I'm seriously considering the move. I'm coming from a small city. A few questions:

1. Which neighborhoods should I look at for a $1000-1500 budget?
2. How's the commute situation?
3. Is the crime as bad as the stats suggest?
4. Any hidden costs I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

Good summary. I'd rate it higher personally — maybe 7/10.

Great post! One thing I'd mention is the west side tends to be more affordable. Makes a big difference.

For families, I'd recommend looking at Old Town. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.

If you can afford it, Cedar Hills is the best place to live. Period.

Been here 20 years. The city has changed a lot but overall for the better.
