What I wish I knew before living in Plainfield

Random thought, Military spouse here. Poverty rate is 12.5%, which is around average. Rent is about $1,673/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 55--F, so expect cold winters. With a population of 54,515, Plainfield is a smaller city. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Pros:
- Diverse community
- Easy commute
- Good internet infrastructure
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Not very walkable
- Limited dining options
- Boring for young people
- Limited cultural events
What neighborhoods would you suggest? Any help is appreciated. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Downtown. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in construction. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely underrated and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (North) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 14 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Phoenix about 2 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Winters are long and cold

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are manageable, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in South. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Westside for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
- The school system scene is average

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Road conditions need improvement

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Hope this helps!.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Close to major attractions
- The walkability scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 56, moved here 14 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in West and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The cost of living situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for remote workers. challenging vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $90K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
