What I wish I knew before living in Plano

Hi all, Military spouse here. The median home value here is around $440,600, which is pretty steep. Crime rate is something to consider — Plano sits at 147.8 per 100K. With a population of 287K, Plano is a mid-size city. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Friendly people
- Low taxes
- Easy commute
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Rising rent prices
- High property taxes
- Poor road conditions
Should I be concerned? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'm a social worker who relocated here from Nashville about 15 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been in Oak Park for 3 years. Moved from Baltimore for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2015 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is average - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Can feel isolated. Dating scene is rough. And school system can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is solid.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely excellent and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Uptown. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in real estate. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Close to major attractions
- The pet-friendliness scene is excellent

The downsides:

- Limited high-paying job options

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much affordable but now it's underrated.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 3 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 51, moved here 1 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Eastside and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Property taxes are high
3. The safety situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for young professionals. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
