First post here. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Poverty rate is 13.5%, which is around average. Household incomes average around $53,962 in Plattsburgh. Median household income is $53,962, which feels on the lower side for the area. Rent is about $964/month for a decent place. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Is this normal for Plattsburgh? The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I genuinely enjoy living here. Internet is better than expected in most areas.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Oak Park for 12 years. Moved from Atlanta for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
legal is strong here. retail is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is average - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And healthcare can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 7/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in West. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in education. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Asian.
